My work revolves around how interpersonal relationships interact with community structures, particularly during moments of instability or war. I explore the relationship between the singular and the whole. I am fascinated by how one element multiplied creates a separate, larger independent form. What are the factors in the union between individual and group that create symmetry and balance, and what creates discordance and volatility? Through years of involvement in activism, I have witnessed the individual and community benefit each other and work symbiotically. Conversely, I have seen imbalance destroy people and their relationships.
Exploring these connections visually is my way of pulling at some threads, in search of answers around the questions of unity. I am inspired by the history of leftist populist movements using block printing for union pamphlets and propaganda posters. The focus on the negative and positive relationships within the composition is fundamental for successful block prints, but it is also what I am looking to achieve conceptually with the world I am creating in my work. I am investigating how balance can exist a-symmetrically. The singular is identifiable and distinct while strengthening the harmony of the composition or collective whole.
